Colorful Art in Original Paintings, Prints, and Artistic Journal

Color sketches, my playing with colors, appear on my other blog http://kjoannrussell.blogspot.com so I've been pondering what should be my focus on this Fine Art America blog. Maybe this could be a summary of what is currently happening in my little art world.

For this post I've attached an image of a recent journal sketch that seemed to suggest red poppies. I've painted these flowers many times because I really like the color red. I also like the many petal shapes in their blooms. The journal entries are merely color explorations, i.e., mixings of a limited number of paint colors. I use acrylics for these usually because of the speed of brush strokes needed with the fast drying time of these paints. It's my fun, so I try to get away from all the "shoulds" and "should nots" of painting. Some have lovely color nuances and some are mixed too much that they are close to the dull "mud" color that results. Yesterday I noticed that I tend toward "mud" quickly when I use cadmium red medium and permanent green light. The obvious reason is that equal strengths of these colors which are complements do produce darks, i.e., potential "mud".

I'm currently working on some very small paintings, a sunflower and a landscape, plus a larger sunflower that I started ages ago based on the line drawing I did as a logo for my business, Sunflower Studio Art.
